Why we take time at the very start

When people book a consultation with me, they often arrive with a clear idea of what they think they want. Whiter teeth. Straighter teeth. A fresher smile. Sometimes they come with photos, sometimes with a long list of questions, and sometimes with a feeling they can’t quite explain.

What they’re usually surprised by is how much time we spend at the beginning simply talking, looking, and understanding.

That isn’t by accident.

The consultation is where everything starts to make sense

I don’t see the consultation as a gateway to treatment. I see it as the most important part of the process.

This is where I get to understand not just what you want to change, but why. What you’ve noticed over time. What you like about your smile. What you’ve never really loved. What feels important to you now, and what doesn’t.

Very often, people come in thinking the issue is one thing, when in reality it’s something else entirely. Tooth colour might actually be gum health. Tooth movement might be linked to bite or wear. A smile that feels tired might need support rather than cosmetic work.

Taking time here avoids guesswork later.

Why we use scans, photographs, and detailed assessment

A thorough consultation allows me to look beyond the teeth you can see to the structures that support them.

Digital scans, photographs, and a clinical assessment give a clear picture of what’s happening beneath the surface. They allow me to explain things visually, so you can see what I’m seeing.

This isn’t about over-complicating things. It’s about accuracy.

When we understand the full picture, we can plan calmly and carefully, rather than rushing into treatment that may not give the result you’re hoping for.

Planning before treatment protects the outcome

One of my core principles is that good results come from doing things in the right order.

Sometimes that means addressing gum health first. Sometimes it means stabilising the bite. Sometimes it means doing very little at all and reviewing later.

I’m very comfortable saying when something doesn’t need to be done, or when it would be better to wait. That only works when the consultation has given us enough information to make those decisions properly.

This approach protects not just the final result, but your time, your investment, and your long-term oral health.

A calm, unrushed experience

I deliberately keep consultations unhurried. This is your time, and I want you to leave feeling clear, informed, and comfortable with whatever decision you make.

There is no pressure to proceed. No expectation that treatment must begin straight away. Some people move forward quickly, others take time to think, and some simply want reassurance.

All of those outcomes are valid.

A personal plan, not a template

No two smiles are the same, and no two treatment plans should be either.

After the initial consultation, I take the time to review everything properly and put together a plan that reflects your goals, your health, and what will work best for you. When we meet again, we go through that plan together, so you can see exactly what’s being recommended and why.

That second conversation is about alignment. Making sure we’re on the same page before anything begins.

Why this matters

Taking time at the very start means fewer surprises later. It means better decisions, more predictable results, and a process that feels considered rather than reactive.

Most importantly, it means you feel looked after.

If you’re considering doing something for your smile, or you’ve been thinking about it for a while but aren’t sure where to begin, a consultation gives us the space to talk it through properly.

No rushing. No pressure. Just a clear starting point.
